Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest 2024: A Celebration of Artistic Talent
The Pokémon Company proudly announced the winners of the 2024 Pokémon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest, a global competition that offers artists the opportunity to see their creations featured on actual Pokémon trading cards. Running from October 2023 to January 2024, the contest embraced the theme “Magical Pokémon Moments.”
Grand Prize Winner: A Pikachu with Personality
The prestigious grand prize was awarded to Japanese artist Kazuki Minami, for their delightful portrayal of Pikachu scratching its ear—a piece inspired by Kazuki’s own dog. As the winner, Kazuki will receive a $5,000 USD cash prize, and their Pikachu illustration will be transformed into an official Promo card in the Pokémon TCG.
Kazuki expressed their gratitude, crediting their pet for the inspiration behind the winning artwork:
“This was my first time participating in this contest, and initially, I was uncertain about what and how to draw. Then, I noticed my dog being adorable, which sparked the idea of depicting Pikachu in a similarly endearing manner. This prize is as much my dog’s as it is mine, and we’re both incredibly thrilled and honored.”
Judges’ Praise for the Winning Artwork
Comments from the contest judges, available on the official website, commend the illustration’s ability to capture a genuine, carefree moment with remarkable detail:
“This illustration exquisitely portrays Pikachu in a tender scene under the warm morning light. Creating an engaging depiction of a simple action like a yawn is no easy feat, yet the artist has successfully crafted a relatable and compelling setting. By placing Pikachu at the center, the artist highlights the moment’s charm while maintaining authenticity through subtle stylization.”

The Significance of the Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest
A Growing Tradition in the Pokémon Universe
With the overwhelming international participation in both the 2022 and 2024 contests, The Pokémon Company is solidifying this event as a recurring and possibly annual celebration of fan engagement. The tradition of art contests dates back to November 1997 in Japan’s CoroCoro Comic. Over the years, fan art competitions have evolved, including events by Wizards of the Coast, the original distributor outside Japan.
The 2019 Pokémon Illustration Grand Prix in Japan introduced a format that continues today, providing artists with a central theme and a list of Pokémon to portray. The 2022 Illustration Contest expanded this format to artists in the United States and Japan, while this year’s competition marked the first to welcome entries from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
As Pokémon continues to seek innovative promo cards, the success of the 2024 contest makes it likely that the Illustration Contest will return, potentially inviting even more countries to participate.
