Masahiro Ito Brings Silent Hill Horror to Magic: The Gathering with Special Guest Card

Silent Hill's Masahiro Ito Redesigns Damnation Card for Magic: The Gathering's Duskmourn Expansion

The latest Duskmourn set for Magic: The Gathering is set to feature a Special Guest card created by a renowned artist from the Silent Hill series. Masahiro Ito, known for his iconic monster designs and his role as the lead monster designer and art director for the first three Silent Hill games, is lending his artistry to an upcoming card. Ito’s work, including the chilling Pyramid Head, has left a lasting impression on fans of the series.

Unveiled at PAX West and reported by Wargamer, the new card is a reimagined version of the Damnation card, showcasing Ito’s artistic vision. This iteration of Damnation introduces Valgavoth, the central antagonist of Duskmourn, through Ito’s lens.

Magic: The Gathering’s Duskmourn Valgavoth: An Ideal Fit for Damnation

The Elder Moth: A Harbinger of Destruction

Special Guest cards in Magic: The Gathering are legitimate MTG card reissues featuring unique artwork by well-known artists. These artists are given the challenge of redesigning card art to align with the game’s current world or expansion. Previously, Magic: The Gathering has partnered with other video games and artists, such as the Assassin’s Creed collaboration in June.

Ito’s vision of Valgavoth transforms an already fearsome elder moth demon into a Lovecraftian nightmare. In his depiction, Valgavoth appears as a flesh-like entity emerging from the shadows, enveloped in a dark cloud. Numerous grotesque human arms extend from its core, creating a design that would seamlessly fit within the haunting universe of Silent Hill, reaching ominously toward the player with its numerous spindly limbs.

The selected card for the reissue is well-suited: Damnation, a sorcery card, annihilates all creatures beyond redemption. Since its introduction in 2006, the Damnation card has been a part of the game, but this reissue integrates it into the Duskmourn expansion. Each Special Guest card also features new flavor text to complement its theme. For the flesh-skinned Valgavoth, it reads:

Bound to a single house, Valgavoth simply expanded its boundaries until it consumes the plane, turning a vibrant world into his playground of terror.

Dubbed the Devouring Father by his followers, the demon’s presence on the card is fitting, as it reveals the fate of creatures once they are damned. Valgavoth emerges as the eerie new adversary of the Duskmourn expansion, spreading dread as he garners strength. Any creatures obliterated by his Damnation card will inevitably serve to satiate his insatiable hunger.

The Duskmourn: House of Horror expansion for Magic: The Gathering is set to release on September 27. Alongside the new rendition of Damnation, several other Duskmourn cards have been unveiled, promising an especially eerie addition to the long-standing trading card game.
